ABSTRACT
We can understand “Environmental management” like a
combination of actions with the objective to obtain a maximum rationality in
the conservation, defense, protection and environmental improvement process.
These goals can be related to the sustainable concept.
A sustainable environmental management must include:
·
Land
Management.
·
Institutional
development and environmental regulation.
·
Environmental
quality control and audit.
·
Environmental
education
To bring to life this sustainable environmental
management there is an instruments group:
·
Precautionaries.
·
Correctives.
·
Complies with.
·
Economics.
·
Environmental education and information.
·
Information generation instruments.
The present research work was carried out, with the
porpouse to give base information to develop remediation strategies to
wastewater produces in the cow leather tannery process that uses chromium.
To these, it was investigated a tannery wastewater
provided to an enterprise that be taken like baton to make an Industrial
Reconvert Plan to ACUMAR (Matanza Riachuelo catchment area authority).
The current treatment methodology gives suitable results,
nevertheless, it has an elevated cost, that cost goes against the
sustainability. This treatment consist in the separation of thickness materials
by screening, equalization to the re-tannery, coloring and greased wastewater,
the addition of a polielectrolite with stirring and pump to a sedimentation
tank, separation of sludges. Then, the wastewater is sent to aeration,
secondary sedimentation, disinfection, measurement and it is discharge to a
drain system. The sludge is sent to a danger waste treatment.
This new management proposal include: recovery and
recycling of chromium from the re-tannery, and separately, the treatment with
electrocoagulation of the coloring and fatliquoring wastewater.
The laboratory tests showed the follow results:
- It is possible the
recovering and recycling of 5% of the Chromium. The concentration of the
wastewater resultant is less than 1 mg/L of chromium.
- Electrocoagulation:
the separation of colorants in cream and sediment reach an efficacy
superior to the 95%.
Keywords: Effluent, leather tannery,
chromium, Electrocoagulation, remediation.
